The Importance of writing a good CV

The average recruiter or manager spends less than a minute to skim read your CV before they decide if they want to read more. That could be it, decision made, document closed and if your CV is not what they want then your chances of getting that ideal job are over before they really began!

So what went wrong?

Well, there are two possibilities:

1. You aren’t right for the Job. Sorry but it could be that simple, take it on the chin and don’t let it get you down.
2. You’re CV is not up to scratch. You have not clearly communicated your skills and experiences as well as another, possibly less capable, applicant.

Point one is a whole new subject but suffice to say it isn’t the end of the world. However point two is near on criminal! So the key to a well written Technical CV is as follows:

Write a CV that clearly states what you would like to do and detail reasons why you are capable of those roles.
This message must be obvious for readers who have contrasting levels of understanding about your field.


1. Example CV Structure

Name
with address and contact details below.


Professional Summary
This is a paragraph defining your career so far, your approach to work and what you wish to achieve.


Education and Qualifications


Skills Summary
Should be table format outlining all of your skills, technical and professional, giving an indication as to the level of your expertise i.e. years, a scoring system etc. Make this list comprehensive i.e. J2EE, EJB, XML, XSLT, C#, Oracle 9i, Pre sales etc.


Employment History
Give dates and name of each employer, your job title and make it clear if you moved up the ladder. Outline your responsibilities and skills used within these roles and any specific achievements you are proud of. Make this section very clear to read quickly and give more information on recent and significant roles.


References


Remember a CV CAN be longer than 2 pages but make the content count!!
